History comes to life aboard the vintage trains as you travel through the heart of gold country in the scenic Sumpter Valley. Running between McEwen and the historic mining town of Sumpter, it’s a guarantee that the whole family will enjoy this relaxing trip back in time without having to leave the comfort of the present.
The Sumpter Valley Railroad is open weekends and major holidays, Memorial Day Weekend through the last weekend in September. Round trips take just over two hours, including layover. Check out our Schedules and Fares.

- Fall Foliage and Photographer's Weekend -
On October 15 and 16, the Sumpter Valley Railroad will be holding the11th Annual Fall Foliage and Photographer’s Weekend. While the number 19 will not be available this year as it is undergoing routine boiler work, our 1915 vintage wood-burning Heisler is more than capable of putting on a good show of smoke and steam surrounded by beautiful fall colors.
Apart from the usual photo stops and run-bys throughout the day we have a few surprises planned as well. Each day will start with a continental breakfast at the McEwen depot at 6:00AM, with the train getting underway just after 7:00AM, with numerous stops along the way as the train makes its way up the valley. Lunch will also be provided both days. Typically, the events wrap up around 3:00 or 4:00PM in the afternoon.
While these trains are open to all, please remember that there will be lots of walking on uneven ground during the photo stops, so boots are recommended. It should also be noted that unfortunately these trains are not handicap accessible. The prices for the trains are as follows…
- Per Person, Saturday or Sunday: $60.00
- Per Person, Full Weekend: $100.00
Reservations are strongly recommended, and there is only space for 35 people each day. For more information, please contact us directly at info@svry.com or you can contact Taylor Rush via cell-phone at 541-979-8884. Payments can be made the day of the event.
- Engineer For a Day -
If you have ever wanted to operate a steam locomotive, this is your opportunity! The SVRR Engineer for a Day program allows you to actually operate a steam locomotive under the supervision of qualified SVRy personnel.
Participants will learn how to operate a locomotive in the McEwen yards, make up a freight train and take it out onto the main line. Learn more >
